Having an automatic garage door opener makes things a lot easier for you because you don't have to get out of the car in order to open your garage to pull your car in. Or at least you don't as long as your garage door remote works. If your garage door remote doesn't open, your automatic opening door suddenly becomes a lot less convenient. So, if your remote stops working, what can you do to get it working again?
Check the Batteries
The first thing that you should do is check your batteries to make sure that they are working. If your batteries are low, then the remote might only work sometimes. If you live somewhere that has been really cold, the cold might have drained your batteries. Depending on your remote and its size, you might have to get a special sizes battery for the remote. One place you can find those batteries is anywhere that watches are repaired because watches often take the same size batteries.
Programming
Your remote and your garage door opener have to be on the same wavelength or they aren't going to work. Sometimes, the motor or the remote will lose their frequency which means that they aren't going to be able to talk to each so that the door will open. You can reset the remote so that everything is back on the same frequency and talking to each other. In general, the way to do it is to find the learn button on your remote. You will need to hold that button down and wait for flashing lights on your door opener's motor. When the lights are done flashing, try opening your garage door again. If the remote opens and closes your door, then you are ready to go. If it doesn't work, try it again, just in case it didn't find the right frequency the first time around. If you still aren't getting anything happening, then that is probably not your problem, and you are going to have to try a different solution to get your remote working.
If you have tried everything possible to get your remote working again, then you need to call a garage door repair company. They will be able to come out to your house and diagnose the problem and get your remote working again. Of course, it may mean that you have to get a new garage door opener, but the remote should be working again.
